A Tamla Motown Collection – Part 18

The Marvelettes – I’ll Keep Holding On – TMG 518

In June 1965, the UK Tamla Motown label was still new enough for some of the US parent labels’ established stars to be receiving their debut releases. Although the Marvelettes had provided the American company’s label’s first number one some four years earlier (with Please Mr Postman), I’ll Keep Holding On did not make a great impression in the UK.

The song was recorded in New York, which was an unusual occurrence at this stage in Motown’s existence. The group was appearing live and Mickey Stevenson travelled to New York to record the song because he didn’t want to wait for the Marvelettes to get back to Detroit.
