A Tamla Motown Collection – Part 19

Brenda Holloway – Operator – TMG 519

I believe that although Motown in the states didn’t seem to know what to do with Brenda Holloway, the UK Tamla Motown team had real hopes that Brenda Holloway would prove to be one of their big stars. In the first 19 UK single releases, two of them are records by Brenda. (The other one is here).

This song was written by Smokey Robinson, but it wasn’t new. It had previously been recorded by Mary Wells. Brenda’s version shows the great artistry and vocal talent, infusing real soul into a song that had previously failed to set the world alight, but this version just didn’t click with the British record buying public back in June 1965.
