A Tamla Motown Collection – Part 23

The Detroit Spinners – I’ll Always Love You – TMG 523

This song will always take me back to my early days as a DJ when it was a regular play at my regular Tuesday night gig at a youth club in Rochford, Essex.

“I’ll Always Love You” was co-written by William “Mickey” Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter and produced by Stevenson and Hunter as a single for The Spinners on the (US) Motown Records label. The single became the Detroit-reared group’s first charting single on the Motown Records company since they had signed with the company in 1964 (and their third charting hit over all).

However, for it;s release on the UK Tamla Motown label, the company had to avoid a name clash with the much better known UK folk group of the same name, so the Detroit Spinners were created as their UK “brand”, a brand which continued way beyond their tenure at Motown.

The song featured lead vocals by the group’s main lead singer, Bobby Smith .
